Post-operative Instructions
Following your wisdom teeth extraction, it is essential to follow these post-operative instructions to promote healing and prevent complications.
1. Rest: Rest for the first day after the surgery, and avoid any strenuous activity or exercise. It is recommended to take a few days off work or school to allow your body to heal.
2. Pain Management: Take the prescribed pain medication as directed by your dentist or oral surgeon. It is best to take it before the anesthesia wears off to prevent severe pain. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen, can also be taken to manage pain.
3. Bleeding: It is common to experience bleeding for the first 24-48 hours after surgery. Use clean gauze or a tea bag to bite down on the extraction site for 30-45 minutes to control bleeding. Repeat as needed.
4. Swelling: Swelling can occur after surgery, which can be reduced by applying an ice pack to the affected area for 10-20 minutes at a time, with intervals of 30 minutes in between. Do this for the first 48-72 hours after surgery.
5. Oral hygiene: Avoid brushing or rinsing your mouth for the first 24 hours after surgery. After that, gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water or prescribed mouthwash to keep the area clean.
6. Diet: Stick to soft foods for the first few days after surgery, and avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods that may irritate the extraction site. You can gradually return to a regular diet as you feel comfortable.
7. Smoking and Alcohol: Avoid smoking and consuming alcohol for at least 48 hours after surgery, as it can interfere with healing.
8. Follow-up Appointment: Attend your follow-up appointment to ensure proper healing and the absence of complications.
If you experience severe pain, bleeding, fever, or any other unusual symptoms, contact your dentist or oral surgeon immediately. Following these instructions will help ensure a smooth and speedy recovery from your wisdom teeth extraction.
